Bio-individuality is a concept that refers to the biological uniqueness of each person.

The first person I know of in the Western world to write scientifically about this idea was Roger J. Williams, Ph.D., who published Biochemical Individuality in 1956.

But the idea of biological individuality could be said to date back at least 5,000 years to the birth of the ancient Indian and Chinese systems of medicine that emphasized constitutional differences among people.

The way I view bio-individuality, biochemical individuality is an emergent property of multiple types of bio-individuality that I have listed below. So it does not have its own separate category in the list I have created.

And I consider bio-individuality to extend beyond biology because there are non-biological aspects of human individuality that directly affect biology. These are the 10 types of bio-individuality that I am aware of ...

  1. Genetic
  2. Epigenetic
  3. Metabolic
  4. Nutritional
  5. Anatomical
  6. Gastro-intestinal (including microbiome)
  7. Bioenergetic
  8. Doshic / Elemental
  9. Psychosocial
  10. Astrological
  11. Spiritual

Genetic individuality refers to differences found in the DNA of individuals that affect not only the visually obvious differences among us but also affect the form and function of the proteins that execute most biological functions in the body.

Epigenetic individuality refers to the differences in how environmental influences in a person's current life and in the lives of the person's ancestors have added epigenetic "marks" to their DNA that influence the expression of that person's genes.

Metabolic individuality refers to patterns in how an individual's metabolism tends to use the various regulatory and biochemical pathway options available for producing energy from food.

Nutritional individuality refers to the unique nutritional requirements of a person that can differ substantially from those of another person, and this nutritional individuality emerges from a combination of perinatal and childhood nutrition as well as many of the other forms of bio-individuality and factors that influence them, such as metabolic, genetic, epigenetic individuality (and other forms of individuality described below).

Anatomical individuality is the variability in form, size, and function of parts of the body. Did you know that not everybody has the same number of vertebrae in their spine, and that human stomachs can be shaped so differently that they can look like they come from entirely different species?!

Microbiome individuality refers to the unique composition of microbes in and on an individual's body that tends to persist throughout their lifetime, though a person's microbiome does go through major shifts under the influence a multitude of factors.

Bioenergetic individuality, the way I'm definining it here (which differs from other definitions of "bioenergetic), is a type of individuality that I includes variations the meridians, chakras, and nadis that carry various forms of energy in the physical and subtle bodies, and it is probably closely linked with doshic and psychosocial individuality, described below.

Doshic / Elemental individuality refers to an individual's unique combination of the essences or elements described in ancient Indian and Chinese medical systems. The Indian system of Ayurveda describes the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha essences as blends of the elements of earth, water, fire, air, and ether, which is similar to the five-elements in the system of Chinese medicine-water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. Though these concepts make no sense to Western science, they have proven themselves over the millennia to be useful systems for understanding human individuality and balancing certain types of imbalances.

Psychosocial individuality includes factors such as personality, temperament, developmental attachment styles, trauma-induced psychological patterns, or variability in the quantity and quality of social interaction that an individual needs to be healthy emotionally and physically.

Astrological individuality is the unique combination of influences represented by the positions of planets and stars that influence a person's psychological, biological, and even "life path", "dharmic", or "karmic" attributes. Systems like medical astrology and Human Design describe these influences in ways that can be especially useful for understanding bio-individuality.

Spiritual individuality is how a person conceives of and interacts with the idea of divinity, ranging from no believe in divinity (atheism) to the many spiritual belief systems that a person can adopt.

If you think that I've now gone off the deep end for talking about astrology, I understand. But my life experiences convince me that astrology reveals aspects of bio-individuality that align with what is seen in other more "scientific" forms of bio-individuality. Astrology can also provide uncanny predictions and explanations of health influences and events in a person's life that do not seem to have any other explanation.

If you have a spiritual orientation, you could think of bio-individuality as forming a "blueprint" that guides the construction of the body-mind that a soul inhabits.

Like a blueprint for a house, the bio-individual blueprint can be modified a bit after construction, but for the most part the structure remains the same, and the ways in which it functions largely remain the same throughout its life.

With a house, although you can improve the plumbing and wiring, you can't do as much about how many support beams and exterior walls it has. And like the systems of a house, the systems of a person's body vary in how much you can modify them.

For example, you're not going to be able to change the number of vertebrae in your spine, but you can shift your metabolism quite a bit to thrive on differing macronutrient ratios and a wider variety of foods, developing more metabolic flexibility, and being less of a metabolic "type". Even so, unique metabolic tendencies remain evident in most people throughout their entire life.

As with ancient Indian and Chinese medical systems, human cultures have recognized bio-individuality for millennia and have created typology systems for analyzing it and using it in traditional medicine.

And we can expand this practice in the modern era with new capabilities such as the analysis of genes and their highly-specific influences.

On a practical level, a comprehensive, in-depth assessment of bio-individuality and symptoms of imbalance can help to identify targeted lifestyle, dietary, nutritional, bioenergetic, biophysical, and psychospiritual remedies and practices that are best suited for reversing imbalances and optimizing the health of an individual.

An assessment process can involve questionnaires, lab testing, bioenergetic testing,  genetic analysis, and more. A very detailed assessment process forms the foundation of the Bio-Individual Blueprint system I use to help people discover their unique blueprint, overcome wellness issues, double their energy, and even become biologically younger.
